Tired of fixing your falling dentures every time you speak? Well, worry no more, we got you covered.
Losing all your teeth can be a nightmare but wearing removable dentures can be the worst nightmare for most of you! Studies have revealed that people using dentures suffer from low self-esteem and specific issues related to the dentures like difficulty in speech and mastication. Implants are an excellent long-term option for restoring your smile.
CASE SELECTION
A comprehensive diagnosis is important for all implant cases, including 3D imaging with CBCT to evaluate and identify the amount of available bone. The full mouth implant treatment concept makes it possible to provide treatment for patients who
- have no teeth in both the arches.
- have xerostomia ( dry mouth ) since there wouldn’t be retention of the dentures.
- have a severe compromise of the denture supporting areas
- have hyperactive gag reflexes elicited by removable dentures
- does not have any debilitating systemic illness.
HOW IS IT DONE?
Implant placement is a tedious process. So, initially, we surgically place the implant into the jawbone. Also, a diet of soft foods, cold foods and warm soup might be recommended during the healing process.
Then time is given for the bone around the implant to heal. This process is called osseointegration. What makes an implant so strong is that the bone actually grows around it and holds it in place. Osseointegration means “combines with the bone†and takes time. Some patients might need to wait until the implant is completely integrated, up to several months, before replacement teeth can be attached to the implant. Other patients can have the implants and replacement teeth placed all in one visit.
Finally, it is time for the placement of artificial teeth. For full mouth implants, only four implants are required to stabilize a full-arch fixed prosthesis. Therefore, the best sites for implant placement can be identified and utilized, making immediate full-arch prosthesis possible.
ADVANTAGES
Dental Implants can
- Behave like natural teeth: It restores full chewing power. They can eat with it completely normal, and they can brush normally as well.
- Last a lifetime: The implants are made from titanium and integrate with the jawbone. It is bio-compatible, meaning that it’s non-toxic and is not rejected by the body.
- Prevent bone loss: Bone loss occurs in the jaw when there are no tooth roots (or implants) keeping the jaw bone stimulated. So when there is no tooth in the socket, the bone in that empty space starts deteriorating. Implants can prevent this from happening since it keeps the bone stimulated. Dentures can even accelerate bone loss as they often become loose, and then rub against the bony ridge, gradually wearing it away. Since implants replace the root as well as the tooth, and chewing is restored to normal, it provides the needed stimulation for natural bone growth.
- Prevent facial sagging and premature aging : Facial sagging can be due to bone loss resulting from missing teeth. This is when the lower third of the face starts to collapse, gradually closing the distance between the tip of the nose and the chin. Changes can include excess wrinkles around the mouth, thinning lips and a more pointed chin, making the person look a lot older than his or her true age.
ADVANTAGES OVER REMOVABLE DENTURES
Implants are far superior to removable dentures. Since dentures can cause bone loss, an initially good-fitting denture can also be loose after a point in time. The most common disadvantage of dentures is the fact that the patient has a limited diet due to poor chewing ability with dentures. If you are having a hard time choosing between implants and dentures, probably the comparison below can help you out.
- Bye-bye adhesives: Dentures often have to be kept in the mouth by using a dental adhesive. This sometimes requires re-glues after meals. An implant-supported denture requires no adhesive since it is fixed to your jaw.
- Cumbersome cleaning: Dentures have to be removed for cleaning. But your implant-supported prosthesis does not require any removal, normal brushing and flossing would do.
- Alteration of taste: Dentures cover the roof of the mouth which doesn’t allow you to sense the taste but with your implant-supported prosthesis, there’s nothing covering the roof of your mouth to interfere with your sense of taste or other normal activities.
- Slipping of dentures: Dentures can slip out while eating or speaking. Implant-supported dentures are securely anchored and won’t slip out while you eat or speak. It’s hard to chew with dentures and you can’t eat a lot of food you like or need. Dentures can move while you chew, which is annoying, and also makes it difficult to chew!
- Clicking sound: Dentures may click while eating but your implant-supported dentures have no annoying clicking sound.
- Prevents bone loss: Dentures don’t provide the stimulation needed to prevent bone loss. The jawbone needs to have the stimulation of high-pressure chewing to stimulate the bone and prevent bone loss. Implants stimulate the jaw bone hence preventing bone loss.
- Facial sagging: Progressive bone loss as a result of wearing dentures can cause facial collapse. Over the years bone loss can cause the collapse of the lower third of your face, creating excessive wrinkles, sagging skin and jowls, thinning lips, and a sunken-in look. This can considerably age a person’s appearance. Implants prevent bone loss.
- Durability: Dentures don’t last a lifetime but your implant-supported prosthesis can!
