WHY ?

The main reasons to get a cap are :

  • To protect a weak tooth after root canal treatment: In root canal treatment, the infected pulp is removed from the tooth and filled with filling materials like gutta percha etc. So, since the tooth is now dead, the tooth becomes weak. If you bite on to some hard objects, there is a chance that your tooth fractured into 2 pieces. If that happens there is nothing we can do except removal of the tooth. To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to place a cap on your tooth after root canal treatment.
  • To cover a tooth with a large filling.
  • To cover an implant.
  • To cover a tooth that has been discoloured.
  • To protect a cracked tooth.
  • For aesthetic purposes.

TYPES

There are different types of dental crowns/ caps available.

  1. All – metal crowns : These are crowns that are made only of metal. They are most commonly used on the posterior (back) teeth since they aren’t much visible. The metals that can be used in dental crowns, including gold, palladium, nickel and chromium.

 Pros :

  • They are strongest.
  • They cause minimal wearing of the surrounding teeth as compared to other materials.
  • They require a very little amount of trimming of the tooth.
  • They are very durable.
  • They can last for a longer period of time upto 15 years.
  • They rarely chip or break.

 Cons :

  • They are not tooth coloured hence not aesthetic.
  • Base-metal alloys frequently contain nickel, beryllium, or chrome which can promote an allergic reaction.

Cost : Metal crowns are usually cost effective.

  1. Porcelain fused metal crowns : These crowns basically combine the strength of the metal crowns and the aesthetics of the porcelain. These are fabricated from metal and then covered with a thin layer of porcelain.

 Pros :

  • They offer both the durability of metal and the esthetics of porcelain.
  • Greater biting power
  • Prevents chips or cracks
  • Less costly

 Cons :

  • They are expensive than metal crowns.
  • The metal in these crowns may cause a grey line at the gum line.
  • Base-metal alloys frequently contain nickel, beryllium, or chrome which can promote an allergic reaction.
  • For people who clench their teeth, this type of crown may wear down more easily against the opposing teeth.

Cost : The cost of PFM crowns start from 4000 and varies.

  1. Zirconia crowns : These crowns are extremely aesthetic. They are tooth coloured. It’s a type of ceramic – a zirconium oxide – that’s stronger than porcelain and some metal alloys.

 Types :

  • Solid Zirconia : This is opaque, so it’s generally recommended for posterior crowns. More durable to withstand the forces of mastication. This material is  particularly suitable for patients who may grind their teeth. There is low wear on the opposing teeth. They are naturally esthetic, transmit the color of adjacent teeth, and can be matched to any shade.
  • Zirconia Layered : This is more translucent and opalescent, and is especially suitable for anterior crowns, unlike solid zirconia. 100% metal-free, hence prevents gingival darkening and removes the possibility of exposing metallic margins if gum recession  begins. It has natural looking esthetics, and are extremely strong for multi-unit bridges. It is semi-transparent with a high opacity to mask underlying tooth   discoloration, metal cores and implant, abutments. It may also be used for posterior crowns if there is sufficient clearance.

 Pros :

  • Most aesthetic.
  • They cause less stress and damage on opposing pieces as compared to porcelain.
  • Most durable monolithic ceramic.
  • More split-resistant, stiffer, and stronger.
  • It is biocompatible, i.e. less likely to provoke the body into producing a reaction or immunological response like inflammation.
  • They adhere well to your tooth.
  • They are metal-free, preventing darkening around the gingival margin in patients.
  • They are comfortable for patients as they do not transmit hot and cold like conventional PFMs.

Cost : The cost of zirconia crowns start from 7000 and can go upto 25000.
